With New Year 2015 resolutions on the horizon, Changers CO2 fit is designed for environmentally conscious people who want to live healthier lives and, at the same time, do something measurable and positive for the environment. Changers CO2 fit rewards activities that reduce CO2 emissions, and challenges you to be fit, active, and think about how you get from A to B.
Changers, the company that motivates people to change their energy behavior, has launched a new mobile app that measures sustainable behavior and rewards it with Recoins, the world’s first green currency based on CO2 savings. CO2 fit, which is now available Apple iPhone and Android smartphones, calculates the net CO2 effect of cycling, taking a bus or train, or driving car and converts it into a Recoin unit for every kilogram of CO2 the user saves.
The idea is simple: motivate people to select sustainable transportation options. The user starts the app before each trip by bike, public transport, or car and receives an automatically calculated CO2 balance at the end of the trip. If you saved CO2, you are rewarded with Recoins – the Changers digital currency. If you emitted CO2, for example by driving your car, your CO2 emissions are also displayed. Afterwards, you can offset a negative CO2 balance in various ways, eg. through the use of Recoins. Motivating awards, badges & worldwide rankings round out the free offer for iOS and Android.
Changers now opens the call for an international CO2 savings competition. Users in 61 countries and 736 cities are already vying for the top spots in the Changers world ranking. From Buenos Aires to Zurich, sustainably-‐traveled kilometers are measured in the app and are automatically added to the global balance sheets. Who saves the most, gets ahead.
The playful competition is supported with motivational awards that users can earn by achieving goals. For every kilometer, users receive the sustainable – i.e CO2 efficient -‐ digital climate currency, Recoin.
The Recoins are also the CO2 lever in the Changers game mechanics, because with this climate currency, users can buy Gold Standard CO2 Certificates in the app. So, first change your behaviour, get rewarded with Recoins, and then make your life CO2-‐free.
Currently, each Recoin is equal to the value of one kilogram of CO2 savings. So you can start commuting to work by bike and earn Recoins, which can neutralize your unavoidable travel by car or by plane. Start biking already today to compensate for the CO2 emissions of your family holiday coming up this summer.
"We give everyone the possibility to participate in CO2 emissions trading, and using Recoins earned through conscious behaviour change, acquire shares in CO2 Certificates. It’s fun, gives you a good feeling and enables you to become aware of the impact of your own behaviour."
Changers has now expanded their gamification concept using sustainable energy behavior towards the aspect of sustainable mobility. This connection is established by the digital climate currency Recoins, which users can also create themselves through the production of renewable energy with the intelligent Changers Solar Charger. With the launch of the app it quickly becomes clear what the two founders, Daniela Schiffer and Markus Schulz, want to create with Changers: a world climate currency that can be rewarded for sustainable behavior, based on CO2 savings. Changers gives everyone the possibility to self-produce this currency, while also allowing people to earn the currency through sustainable behavior.
"For CO2 savings users receive Recoins and for Recoins, users get CO2 savings"
What are CO2 Certificates?
A CO2 certificate represents a saving of one tonne of CO2. This saving was determined by an independent audit firm. As with groceries labelled “organic”, there are also different standards and qualities regarding certificates that must also be considered
Which CO2 Certificates are we buying?
Changers buys “Gold Standard” certificates. This was launched in 2003 by several environmental organizations, including the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). These certificates are subject to the strictest rules and are characterized by the fact that the certified climate projects not only promote a reduction of greenhouse gases but also sustainable development of the country.
The acquisition of certificates is always useful if the emissions otherwise could not have been avoided or reduced and also for funding climate protection projects that excluding revenues, could not have previously been funded.
Changers was founded by two entrepreneurs: Daniela Schiffer and Markus Schulz, who want to make sustainable behavior as measurable as a unit of CO2. The idea: motivate people to contribute to reducing climate change by changing their behavior. Changers combines reaching for climate goals with gamification and a green digital currency, which can be earned by choosing sustainable, CO2-saving, behaviors. The company is based in Babelsberg/Potsdam and is funded by the EU and the state of Brandenburg, near Berlin.
